Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Description
Monster Hunter is a legendary game series that was once exclusive to Nintendo’s gaming systems and contributed to the company’s great success. On the Nintendo 3DS, the series continued to flourish with many excellent titles, and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is one of them.
Overview of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate revolves around the story of the Gore Magala, a monster that infects other creatures with a potent virus. This strange disease causes them to enter a “Frenzy” state – becoming more aggressive and powerful, and they can also transmit the virus to you. However, if you inflict enough damage and resist the virus, you can harness its power to boost your own stats.
The game’s journey will take you through many towns, and while Monster Hunter isn’t known for its plot, the interesting characters help make the individual quests less monotonous. If playing solo, the game also improves the training and understanding of how your AI companions work. The Palico companions now come in various versions with unique and more reliable skills. For example, if you get poisoned, your healer Palico might automatically bring you an antidote. They come in many colors and skills, and finding a Palico that suits your playstyle is more enjoyable than finding masks for your companions in 3U. Additionally, there’s a cute mini-game that allows you to send Palicos to gather materials to craft equipment for them.
Signature Gameplay of the Monster Hunter Series
The name Monster Hunter implies hunting large and dangerous monsters, designed based on mythical and real-world creatures. At first glance, you might think this is a game in the style of Bayonetta or God of War if you’ve never played a title in the series, but the reality is quite different. Combat in the game is slow and deliberate, forcing you to master weapon types and understand your enemies’ body language.
You can’t just press a button to heal; instead, you have to drink a potion, wait a moment, and perform a humorous arm-raising animation. You also can’t wildly swing your weapon; you need to reload your ranged weapons or sharpen your melee weapons when they become dull. Monster Hunter makes you feel vulnerable from the start, but overcoming that fragility to achieve victory is one of the most rewarding sensations you’ll ever find in a gaming experience.
Diverse and Balanced Weapon System
A fascinating aspect of the combat is the multitude of playstyles offered by the 14 main weapon types: from compact and agile to large and slow; from ranged combat to unique options like the hunting horn, which requires rhythmic button presses to create music that buffs your team. This installment also introduces two new weapon types: the Charge Blade – a combination of sword and axe with great power, and the Insect Glaive – complex but incredibly satisfying to use, paired with an insect that can be launched and the ability to vault towards enemies. Early in the game, you’ll go through a series of quests to try out all the weapon types, helping you find the one that suits you best.
Unique and Deep Crafting System
Monster Hunter doesn’t have a leveling or experience system. Instead, you’ll craft better equipment through an extensive crafting process. Most new gear is made from parts collected from defeated monsters. Each armor set can be freely combined, coming with different skills, elemental attributes, and weaknesses. You can also craft items by gathering ore, fruits, mushrooms, insects, and many other things in the game world.
Monster Hunter has a strong MMO RPG feel with its frantic gathering and grinding mechanics. One point that might make players complain is that the game requires a lot of grinding to get everything you want. I agree that some quests, like transporting eggs that break with the slightest touch from an enemy or obstacle, are not fun at all. However, the repetitive moments in Monster Hunter can strangely bring a sense of relaxation.
Decent Graphics and Optimized Control Scheme
On the Nintendo 3DS, Monster Hunter 4U makes good use of the limited graphical capabilities with creative monster designs and surprisingly immersive locations. If you’re expecting high-detail graphics like true console games, this isn’t the game for you. The control scheme has also been optimized for the 3DS’s dual screens. You can adjust the camera in the Zelda style or have it automatically rotate towards monsters, but to freely rotate the camera, you have to use the 3DS’s bottom touch screen.
Conclusion
Overall, Monster Hunter 4U is both the most feature-rich title and the best starting point in the series. The replay value is almost infinite. The game is deep, challenging, and sometimes repetitive – elements that might deter some players. But if you love tough combat like Dark Souls and the collecting, elemental battling mechanics of Pokémon, Monster Hunter 4U might be the perfect choice for you.
