Shovel Knight Description

Shovel Knight draws heavily from the past. The game features 8-bit graphics, a chiptune soundtrack, and mechanics borrowed from many classic NES games. However, Shovel Knight is not just a mere copy. It takes what was great about those games and expands on their ideas, creating something both familiar and unique with excellent levels, lovable characters, and plenty of clever secrets. Shovel Knight is an outstanding game regardless of whether you’ve ever played a game with a controller.

Story

The story of Shovel Knight is simple and surprisingly tragic. For years, the Shovel Knight and his beloved Shield Knight roamed the land, vanquishing monsters and seeking treasure. Their adventure ended after arriving at a mysterious tower and being attacked by an unknown force. Shield Knight presumably died in battle, leaving a grief-stricken Shovel Knight alone to contend with The Enchantress, a wicked entity trying to dominate the world. Despite this, Shovel Knight still believes his love is out there waiting to be rescued.

Gameplay and Difficulty

You’ll spend most of your time in Shovel Knight digging through a series of increasingly complex levels. Like Mega Man and its Robot Masters, these levels are always themed after their respective bosses, such as the icy tundra of Polar Knight’s stage or the dangerous lab of Plague Knight. Like the best platformers, each level is unique as they introduce many new ideas. You are rarely stuck doing slightly harder versions of the same thing.

There has never been a 2D platformer that felt as precise as Shovel Knight. The Shovel Knight moves exactly where you want him to go every time. If you die, it’s because you made a mistake. At the start, Shovel Knight’s abilities are fairly simple: he can jump, attack or dig with his shovel, and bounce on things in a similar fashion to Scrooge McDuck. Soon after, you’ll also acquire a variety of usable items like an anchor that functions like the axe sub-weapon from Castlevania and a blade that allows you to glide through the sky.

The game makes every action feel rewarding. For example, you’ll find a sparkling pile of dirt, which indicates hidden treasure underneath. Gems and coins will fly out as you dig through the pile until nothing is left but a line of riches. That treasure could have been placed anywhere in the stage, but the act of digging makes it feel more spectacular than simply running over and picking things up. It’s a small but appreciated touch in a game full of similar discoveries.

Exploration and Charm

One of Shovel Knight’s strongest aspects is that there’s always so much to discover. Fake walls and hidden paths conceal secret areas, and these areas are often the most challenging parts of any stage, frequently requiring difficult platforming skills, but they also offer great rewards. While finding secrets is satisfying in itself, Shovel Knight also tries to encourage players to explore. Some items are hidden in secret areas, and these items are essential for conquering optional stages. These additions yield a lot of money and are quite fun even if you don’t need the money.

This is true for the game’s levels as well. Shovel Knight’s two towns are among the best areas in the game. Both are filled with ridiculous characters like a toad who laughs at his own jokes and a man who worships a salmon king (a giant half-salmon, half-apple creature). All these strange and wonderful individuals truly contribute greatly to making Shovel Knight feel more like a real world than just a collection of levels.

Conclusion

The music reinforces the game’s special feeling with tunes that rival the classics found on the NES. Shovel Knight works well because it knows exactly what it wants to be. The people behind it have a clear love for retro games, and that shared passion has created something wonderful. Too often, we play games that try to exploit nostalgia in the cheapest ways possible, whether it’s half-baked HD remasters or blatant rip-offs. Shovel Knight is one of the few games that not only honors the past but could itself become something we reminisce about for years to come.
