Kirby: Triple Deluxe Description

So much has disappeared into Kirby’s bottomless stomach throughout his illustrious career, but you wouldn’t call the little guy a stress eater. He only really eats when he’s happy, and the thing is, he’s pretty much always happy. Kirby Triple Deluxe throws a party on the Nintendo 3DS, laying out a veritable buffet for the cute gourmand.

Triple Deluxe gives you plenty of options and lets you enjoy the meal at your own pace. There are a few modes to try right from the start, but the main course is a substantial story mode, like a fresh update of Kirby’s greatest hits. His house gets unexpectedly lifted into the clouds, and Kirby climbs a giant beanstalk to chase after a menacing-looking spider, eventually making his way through six different worlds to rescue his old frenemy, King Dedede.

Each world has levels, and each level contains its own challenges and enough secrets to keep things interesting. You’ll need to collect a certain number of shiny sun stones to clear the path to the final boss in each area. Some of the stones are hidden, but if you pay attention, you’ll gather enough of them to progress without having to replay previous levels. You’ll enjoy seeking them out because they feel rare and thoughtfully concealed, and you’ll be rewarded handsomely for your thoroughness.

Many of his problems can be solved with just a deep breath, but for Kirby, variety is the spice of life. Swallowing different kinds of enemies lets you copy their fighting styles, whether it’s wielding a weapon, using a magic wand, or transforming into a wheel. Just repeatedly pressing the B button will usually take care of any baddies bothering you, but each outfit actually has a wide range of different moves for players to discover.

Things get a little trickier as you delve deeper into the game, and there are tougher side levels to unlock for players who want to test their skills. Most enemies aren’t actually that hard to defeat, but it’s how you defeat them, and there are countless different ways to fight. Some techniques are more practical or powerful than others, but firing arrows, somersaulting like an acrobat, or clobbering foes with bells are all fun, and there’s always something new right around the corner. It’s great to have so much good stuff, although sometimes the sheer number of powers you’re given makes you feel like it doesn’t really matter what Kirby eats. Occasionally, you’ll need a specific ability to complete a specific task, but generally, you’ll have a lot of room to play around and find your favorite powers.

Triple Deluxe is never too difficult, but it’s extremely good at keeping you engaged. Kirby will find himself hopping back and forth between the foreground and the background, and in addition to looking pretty neat in 3D, it blends the two planes together for some compelling action and clever puzzles. Although the overall pace is fairly relaxed, sometimes making some levels feel like they just keep going, you might find yourself having to quickly and skillfully navigate a series of enemies to keep up with a key that opens a secret door.

Kirby’s Hypernova ability gives him super-powered suction, sending you on a hilarious and destructive power trip. The first time is really impressive, and while it doesn’t feel quite as spectacular every time you use it, the devastation you cause is always amusing, and there are a few different ways to use the ability, from solving puzzles to simply inhaling everything in sight. The other two parts that make up Triple Deluxe act as fairly tasty side dishes.

You can play by yourself, but Kirby Fighters adds a fun local multiplayer element, letting four players choose their favorite ability and duke it out in an arena. Players who don’t have their own copy of the game can join in using Download Play, and it’s nice to have a place to try out moves like blocking and dodging, which feel more or less optional in the main game. In Dedede’s Drum Dash, you’ll jump and clap to the beat, collecting coins across three different stages. For some players, it’ll be the unwanted vegetable you push around your plate and ignore, but others might enjoy getting into the rhythm and trying to get a high score. It doesn’t take too long to see the story through, but Triple Deluxe has a little bit more for you to do after you savor your victory in the Arena mode, where you fight every boss in a row, and DDD pops up once again in a side mode that lets you take on a condensed, remixed version of the main quest with tougher enemies.

It’s safe to say that the game earns the ‘Deluxe’ in its title, and pretty much everything here is as well-made, charming, and lighthearted as its hero, Kirby. Kirby: Triple Deluxe ROM is now available here, and you can download it for free to play on any Nintendo 3DS emulator.
