[3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot ROM

Kirby Planet Robobot is one of the most beloved titles in the series and is considered by many to be the best Kirby game of all time. We, along with many other players, easily rank this 3DS title at number one when discussing the most worthy representative for this title.

Story

It was a peaceful day on Pop Star, everyone was living their best lives, when a spaceship hovered over the planet. King Dedede and Meta Knight were the first to arrive on the scene but were shot down as the invaders drilled deep into the ground. While the robot army landed, our lovable little Kirby was fast asleep through it all. Upon waking up, he finds a new mechanical world being built and goes to see what’s going on.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Planet Robobot is very similar to Triple Deluxe. You control the main character Kirby as he adventures through side-scrolling levels, moving between the main stage and the foreground. Collect 100 stars for an extra life, stickers, and code cubes. Code cubes are needed to unlock the firewall to the boss. If you collect every code cube in a level, you’ll unlock a significantly harder EX level. And of course, the copy abilities that are the hallmark of the series are still present: inhale and swallow enemies to gain new powers.

Three new abilities have been added, including Robobot, Doctor (throws medicine and creates various effect flasks), Poison (I quite enjoy riding toxic waste into enemies, spewing poison, or just burping out toxic gas), and my personal favorite, ESP (kind of like some psychic kid). ESP not only allows you to control an energy orb from anywhere, but you can also completely disappear and avoid attacks.

Of course, if you’re not a fan of any of the new abilities, the classic ones always return, such as Sword, Bombs, Jet, Fire, and Ice. And if you need help figuring out what each ability can do, just pause the game, and it will describe every move and how to execute it in detail.

Game mode

If you need a break from the story mode, Robobot offers Kirby 3D Rumble, where you shoot stars at enemies on a 3D plane. Your mission is to destroy as many as possible with just one attack to earn extra bonus points. Team Kirby Clash is another one of our favorite game modes. It’s basically if Kirby was an RPG; you have four traditional character classes, and you take on bosses. I love that you level up, and the Computer Virus nods from Kirby’s Superstar Ultra make me very happy.

Once you complete the story mode, you’ll unlock Return to Meta Nightmare, where you traverse Kirby’s levels as Meta Knight, with very few healing items and fighting stronger versions of the original bosses. Collect blue energy orbs from enemies to power up your sword for healing, speed boosts, or unleashing a devastating attack. We’re huge fans of the Meta Knight modes; they always feel great. And even though they’re supposed to be harder, don’t forget that Meta Knight is Kirby’s mentor and a powerful being. He can destroy obstacles that Kirby needs a mech to get through.

And we can’t forget a familiar Kirby mode: The Arena, a boss rush mode with some healing and power-up items in between. And the True Arena, a boss rush mode with harder variations of the bosses and very few healing items. I can never beat that darn mode.

Impressive Graphics on the Nintendo 3DS

The graphics haven’t changed much from Triple Deluxe, but overall, they’re great. It’s a 3DS game; what you see is what you get. The game design is also very impressive. We absolutely love the mech designs. We think the artist did a fantastic job of showing what each mech can do. Just look at the cutter mech; you can see the Sword influence. Umbrella is another great one, the same color as the standard Umbrella. Fire is orange-red, Ice is light blue. The visual communication is excellent.
