Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked Description
About Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked
Imagine you are in a crowd near a train station and everyone is panicking because of a power outage that prevents them from getting home. The train lines are somehow blocked and then you realize that it is because demons are everywhere ready to attack and kill. That is the setting of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor. This game takes you on the adventure of a group of smart kids who are trying to use supernatural powers to save Tokyo.
This is the Nintendo 3DS version with many improvements. The developers have upgraded the graphics, expanded the story a bit, added more demons, and added new voice acting and some new music.
Mysterious Story
For those who have not played the original, this remake contains the entire content of that game. The story revolves around three characters: Atsuro, Yuzu, and the main character (this character is named by you). They get a “COMP” (which looks like a 3DS) with special software. This strange software allows them to summon, merge, and even buy demons. All done through programs provided by the main character’s mysterious cousin.
This is weird enough, but nothing compared to their daily email newsletter. It’s a lot of reporting on the events of that day instead of yesterday’s events. Like the old TV show Early Edition. But what’s more, you can see a countdown timer above each person’s head telling them when they’ll die. It’s creepy, but it’s useful for figuring out how to save the world.
Unique gameplay that makes this series a brand
Each of your four team members can be supported by up to two demons. As they fight on a tactical grid map, it turns into a regular skirmish. On this board-like area, you and your demons attack enemies and their demons. You can get an extra attack if you land a critical hit or exploit an enemy’s weakness. While not as easy to abuse as in the Persona series, this is a great excuse to diversify your party.
The constant switching from map to short battles breaks up the pacing, making each conflict feel longer than it actually is. Of course, surviving these battles isn’t easy. You’ll probably have to grind, as story battles ramp up in difficulty at an alarming rate, especially early in the game when you’re still trying to figure out what magnetite is and what skill cracks do. No one said overclocking would be easy. Don’t let the difficulty of the game discourage you, as more and more interesting mechanics become available as you progress. And once you get the hang of all the mechanics and rules in this game, it’s definitely a great experience.
Unique Death Clock Mechanic
A truly unique feature of Devil Survivor 1 is the Death Clock. It displays the number of days left to live that only the protagonist can see above everyone’s head. A large part of the plot revolves around your team trying to find ways to prevent someone from dying and convincing them to stay away from dangerous situations and the like.
New Features of Overclocked
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked is essentially an updated re-release of a regular DS game for the 3DS. The developers didn’t add much 3D effects because it really wasn’t necessary. Atlus didn’t have to rely on what could be considered gimmicks to make a good game. That’s pretty cool.
But the game has added voice acting and the developer has also added an eighth-day sequel for three of the six endings. We get a lot of extra storylines that weren’t in the original and expanded a few characters.

Fighting demons is not a game. If we lose, we die, so don’t slack off.
If you like post-apocalyptic strategy RPGs, you’ll find a lot to love about Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked. The engaging story and challenging gameplay will keep you engaged for hours on end whether you’re playing on the original Nintendo 3DS or an emulator. But be prepared to grind because the battles can sometimes be so difficult that they can be frustrating.
