[3DS] Kirby Fighters Deluxe ROM

In 2014, following the success of Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Nintendo and HAL Laboratory had a rather peculiar idea: take two minigames from Kirby: Triple Deluxe, upgrade them, and sell them separately for $7 each on the 3DS eShop. This is how Kirby Fighters Deluxe came to be. Currently, of course, you don’t need to spend $7 because you can download the game’s original ROM file to play for free on a Nintendo 3DS emulator.

Story and Gameplay

This game has absolutely no story, so our focus is entirely on the gameplay and what other interesting things unfold during play.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe plays quite similarly to Super Smash Bros. in terms of gameplay. Kirby is placed in an arena with other Kirbys and must deplete the opponent’s health bar first. Before the match, you can choose a copy ability that you want to use throughout the entire campaign. You will be the champion if you win 10 battles, defeating King Dedede and his Dedede army at the end of the game. It’s a clear objective.

Graphics and Sound

The presentation of Kirby Fighters Deluxe utilizes a lot of assets from the original game, Kirby: Triple Deluxe. All the models are the same, the copy abilities look the same, the stages look the same—most everything is identical. We do have some interesting aesthetic differences in some stage designs, as well as alternative costumes for Kirby. The alternate costumes are quite cute and feature some special patterns to unlock.

Completion and Value

To complete Kirby Fighters Deluxe, you must do the following:

• Defeat the campaign with every copy ability to unlock every alternate costume for each ability.
• Defeat Very Hard mode with at least one of the copy abilities.

Naturally, I chose Hammer as it’s the strongest ability in the game. Very Hard mode lives up to its name, but thankfully, there are unlimited continues, which helps a lot. Defeating Very Hard mode will reward you with the Shadow Kirby skin. Congratulations!

Performing these very simple things will get you 100% completion of the game. Sure, you could complete Very Hard mode with all copy abilities, but it doesn’t actually count towards completion in the long run. Honestly, completing this game doesn’t take more than 3 or 4 hours. Frankly, I recommend completing this game if you want to feel like you got enough out of the $7 eShop game; otherwise, you’ll only play the game for about 10 minutes. Also, it’s very much worth checking out the nostalgic Fountain of Dreams stage.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe is a prime example of “you get what you pay for.” Overall, at its launch price of $7, there isn’t a lot of content here, but it’s enjoyable enough for you to savor. The novelty of playing an arena-style Kirby fighting game will be what keeps you exploring more of the game. Additionally, the excellent visuals are a definite plus.
