Ever Oasis Description

Ever Oasis is one of those rare original titles that didn’t receive much attention when it first launched on the 3DS in 2017. The game comes from developer Grezzo, who has a long history of collaborating with Nintendo. This developer used their experience working on Zelda games to create an original title that borrows heavily from Nintendo’s flagship action RPG, while also possessing enough uniqueness to stand out on its own.

Story and Journey’s Beginning

The game begins by allowing you to name your character, a “seedling” (or a child of the Great Tree), and you start in your brother’s oasis. After he asks you to run a few errands and talk to everyone, something attacks the oasis. Without revealing too much, your brother sacrifices himself so you can try to defeat the chaos. The oasis sadly doesn’t survive because a creature called a water spirit has found it. Apparently, every oasis has a water spirit, but only the head of the oasis can see these water spirits. Once you discover you can see this water spirit, the story begins, and together you create your own oasis. After a few tutorials, your adventure begins with a single seedling wandering into your oasis, quickly becoming your first resident.

Gameplay and Oasis Management

Ever Oasis is a game that blends many elements, and it will definitely bring you a lot of fun. Its combat is like an action RPG, and it shares many similarities with Kingdom Hearts.

Imagine your oasis, the shops you build, keeping everyone happy is a very satisfying feeling, and it only gets better as the game progresses. Initially, it’s not overwhelming like some similar games, but eventually, it becomes quite challenging to ensure every shop is always well-stocked because some items become harder to find, some are only found in special places like labyrinths.

Speaking of labyrinths, these are completely optional challenges you can engage in, choosing the difficulty and type of enemies you want to face with bronze, silver, or gold tiers (gold obviously means the highest difficulty). Be careful, some of these labyrinths are extremely difficult. Most of the time they are fair, but sometimes they will unexpectedly unleash chaos chests, abysmal chests, or menace chests. They summon enemies, and they can summon some pretty powerful ones, and if you take too long to defeat the summoned enemies, it will summon more, which can feel very overwhelming.

There are many side quests to keep you busy in this game. Some quests involve what your residents need to do or need your help with, from venturing out into the world to rescue others or fighting creatures, or simply finding a lost person.

Resident Types and Their Roles

The four different types of residents you have are:

  • Seedlings: Those who run the shops in your oasis.
  • Desert Folk (Travelers): Comprising three species:
    • Druk: A lizard-like creature specializing in spear combat. They love fashion.
    • Serkah: Scorpion-like heavy hitters specializing in hammers. They are very strong and love food.
    • Lagora: Agile rabbit-like creatures specializing in dual-leaf swords. They love novelties like balls or flutes or the like.

All of them play quite important roles in progressing through the game, as all of them have unique skills that allow you to overcome obstacles as well as have strengths against certain enemy types.

Speaking of experience, other ways you can manage your oasis are that you can send the three different traveling species out to collect items for you, such as hunting for materials or going out to defeat monsters for special monster materials. This also allows them to level up, so if you have someone you think you want to level up but you already have a perfect team, keep one person to go monster hunting, and they’ll level up instantly.

Combat System and RPG Elements

Combat in Ever Oasis is also very similar to 3D Zelda games. You have a lock-on system and can string together small combos using heavy and fast attacks. You have a wind attack that powers up as you progress in the game, which can be activated by pressing a button. This is primarily used to solve puzzles, but it can also be very useful for repelling strong enemies or crowd control.

Swapping out party members feels similar to using one of Link’s various items. Some of your party members will attack with bows or use spears or swing giant hammers. All of these can be used in various ways, such as hitting a hard-to-reach enemy or pounding down heavy switches.

Each character’s special abilities also work in the same way. Some of your party members can dig up useful items in soft ground, others can fly up and glide like in Majora’s Mask, and others can curl into a ball and go into small passages, which is just one example.

Ever Oasis also has more RPG elements than most Zelda games. For example, you’ll level up as you defeat enemies and raise stats like strength, stamina, magic, and luck, all of which affect the effectiveness of certain weapons and abilities. Your party members will also have unique passive abilities such as better defense against monster enemies, a greater chance to parry, and a better chance for certain types of items to drop in the wild. These also influence your choice of who to take with you when you explore certain areas.
