Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past Description

If you thought you’d played enough “hero saves the world” style RPGs, then Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past will make you think again. This isn’t a journey that goes straight from point A to point Z; instead, it’s a voyage through space and time, where every fragment you find will unlock a lost land, a forgotten story, and a piece of the world’s very memory.

Starting from a Small Island – and a Mystery Much Larger than the Current Map

You play as the son of a fisherman on the peaceful island of Estard, where the entire world seems to be confined to a few fields and a single kingdom. However, everything changes when you, along with the rebellious Prince Kiefer and your straightforward friend Maribel, discover an ancient, sealed temple. From here, strange stone fragments lead the group through time to the past, reopening lands forgotten by time, and gradually restoring a fragmented world.

Chapter-Divided Story, Profound and Full of Surprises

Each time you assemble enough fragments to activate a new land, you’ll be transported back to the time before that land disappeared. Here, you don’t just fight; you also have to listen, observe, and take decisive actions. Sometimes it’s helping a village fight a petrifying curse, sometimes it’s mediating peace between two warring nations. It’s this content diversity in each region that makes Fragments of the Forgotten Past feel like a collection of fantastical short stories, cleverly connected within a larger picture.

Class System Returns: Level Up Stars, Learn Skills, Flexible Transformations

Dragon Quest VII marks the grand return of the class system, allowing you to freely switch roles for each character. Want Maribel to be a mage or a warrior? Up to you. Want Kiefer to learn the Dancer class, then switch to Priest so he can dance and heal at the same time? No one’s stopping you. The longer you train, the more advanced classes you unlock, like Paladin, Sage, or even a… monster class. This gameplay is incredibly flexible and makes every battle much more interesting.

3DS Version: Fully Remade, Better Graphics, More Accessible

Compared to the original PlayStation version (which was famous for being long and… quite slow), the 3DS remake is completely redesigned with vibrant 3D graphics, with characters and monsters moving smoothly. The map, storytelling, and save systems are also optimized, making it much easier for players to follow progress. Plus, dialogues are expanded, helping to clarify character personalities and story depth.

Rich RPG Experience, for Those Who Truly Like to Dig Deep

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past isn’t a “fast food” game. With over 30 regions, each a distinct story, you’ll spend tens, even hundreds of hours, if you want to explore everything. But in return is a classic RPG journey, not crammed with sudden drama but leaving a truly lasting, deep impression.

This isn’t just an RPG; it’s a journey to rediscover lost lands, memories erased by time, and those genuine emotions that many modern games have lost. If you want a game that’s both profound, long-lasting and embodies the spirit of exploration of the Dragon Quest series, then DQVII is the perfect choice to begin.
