What is the Zero Escape game? It’s a well-written, captivating visual novel series, a collection of elaborately constructed puzzles, a cast of dynamic characters that break free from typical molds, and also a miracle. The first game, 999 or Nine Persons, Nine Hours, Nine Doors, released on the DS in 2009, achieved considerable success in the West thanks to its flawless translation and mature style. In 2016, Nintendo continued to bring the series back to the 3DS with Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma.

Zero Time Dilemma marks the end of the Zero Escape series, a series cherished by almost everyone who has tried it. Virtue’s Last Reward, the second installment in the Zero Escape chronology, ended with a cliffhanger, an ending that left all who experienced it uncertain whether it would ever be resolved. The aesthetics highlighted the chaotic world in which the Zero Escape games take place, and although not revealing anything, there is still a possibility of a fourth game, despite Jutoose’s definitive ending. The writing remains as impressive as ever, juggling multiple endings while fitting into a systematic plot.

Regarding the characters, each one, whether familiar or entirely new, is incredible thanks to incredibly engaging character design and well-produced voice acting. There is also a tension, which has never been absent in the series, but is heightened in this latest installment due to the frequent chaotic acts of violence that appear in the plot.
