[3DS] Yumi’s Odd Odyssey ROM
Yumi’s Odd Odyssey Description
Yumi’s Odd Odyssey is the Western release of the original Sayonara Umihara Kawase on the Nintendo 3DS. The game offers you an extremely hardcore action platforming experience, conveyed through the visuals of a young girl with a fishing line, flinging herself through stages filled with random cultural detritus by defying the laws of physics. And trust me, it’s absolutely brilliant.
We don’t need to question why these girls – including Yumi, her childhood friend who is still only nine years old, and a time-traveling detective descendant of hers – are in this bizarre hellscape filled with bicycle tires and walking eels. Instead of seeking reasons, you’ll be looking for doors to progress to the next stage. But to get there, you need to harness the power of… FISHING. That’s right, you’re equipped with the series’ signature fishing lure and rubber line, allowing you to swing, climb, and slide around each stage to find your way out of this absurdity.
This 3DS version retains gameplay very close to the original, introducing new and interesting obstacles in each stage, challenging you to explore and find challenging hidden exits to advance to more difficult levels. If you follow the basic route, you only need to clear nine stages to see the ending, but for those persistent and skilled enough to find the hidden doors, 41 additional stages will unlock. Most stages have backpacks to collect as an added challenge, and your best times will be uploaded to online leaderboards.
The game’s aesthetic is very familiar, with soothing, cheerful tunes and random bursts of street signs, along with school supplies like desks, erasers, etc. A detailed stage map is always displayed on the bottom screen, hinting at stages with branching exits that need further exploration. And of course, the pre-era replay function also returns, allowing you to save your brilliant maneuvers to show off to your friends: “YOU WON’T BELIEVE THIS JUMP.” They’ll wonder what’s going on, why that girl has a fishing line, and why the platforming mechanics are so amazing.
Yumi’s Odd Odyssey might be the last Umihara Kawase game, but it’s definitely one of the best. It’s a result of love and dedication from the original team. The game delivers the hardcore platforming experience we’ve long craved. If you’ve never played this wonderful game on the original 3DS, it’s time to download its ROM file from this article and enjoy it on a suitable emulator.
