Yo-Kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits Description
True to its name, Bony Spirits is the second installment in the renowned Yo-Kai Watch game series, exclusively released by Nintendo and Level-5 on the Nintendo 3DS system in late 2014. The game boasts over 350 Yo-kai to collect, found in unexpected places like trash cans or parks, making every moment exciting.
After watching an introductory cutscene for the game, you’ll need to choose a new character to begin with. The options are quite simple, only offering a choice between male or female gender. Following this, you’ll name your character. Giving them a catchy name can also make the game more enjoyable, as your name will appear in dialogues, creating a very engaging feeling. The story begins when your Yo-kai Watch is stolen by a group called the Yo-kai Travelers. You will embark on a journey to discover Yo-kai, retrieve your watch, and recover your lost memories. Interestingly, alongside the focused main storyline, you’ll also encounter humorous situations, such as parents arguing over ‘Spirit’ and ‘Soul’ donuts, and many other quirky scenarios!
Yo-Kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits makes a strong impression with its excellent gameplay. Basically, it looks similar to a typical Pokémon game but has quite a few differences and some completely unique mechanics. The in-game map, located on the Nintendo 3DS’s bottom screen, is extremely important as it helps you easily navigate and identify the objectives you need to reach.
As mentioned, the battle system is very engaging and largely reminiscent of Pokémon; however, upon deeper experience, you’ll notice many noteworthy differences to enjoy. It’s not just about wandering around to catch Yo-kai; you can also battle to collect medals or search for hidden Yo-kai. Additionally, you can collect coins to unlock capsules containing new Yo-kai. To befriend Yo-kai, you need to feed them, adding a unique interaction.
The Yo-kai Watch is a useful item, similar to the Pokedex in Pokémon, as it helps you detect hidden Yo-kai in the game world. The first Yo-kai you encounter is Mr. Whisper, a humorous and memorable character. The second is Jibanyan. Each Yo-kai can be given a nickname, which is very useful when playing via StreetPass or local multiplayer. You can also upgrade Yo-kai with experience points and use ultimate attacks in battles. The game features over 350 Yo-kai to discover, belonging to different tribes, creating great diversity. Nintendo also included a physical medal in the game box, this time featuring Jibanyan.
The playing experience is very good, and visually, Yo-Kai Watch 2 Bony Spirits has also been well-crafted. This can be considered one of the best-looking games we’ve ever seen on the Nintendo 3DS. The animations are smooth, detailed, and very eye-catching, set within a detailed and realistic world. There’s truly nothing to criticize regarding the graphics of Yo-Kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits.
The background music and sound effects are very fitting for the situations in the game, from battles to moments of exploration. You’ll especially appreciate how the sound is designed for each Yo-kai. Level-5 has done an excellent job in this aspect.
Perhaps the only minor drawback of the game is that the main character can speak directly instead of just appearing through speech bubbles. However, this does not diminish the game’s value. If you love Yo-kai Watch or want to experience an enjoyable game, download the ROM of Bony Spirits.
