[3DS] Star Fox 64 3D ROM

Greetings, gamers! Welcome back to another fantastic Nintendo 3DS game that we’ll be showcasing in this article! Today, we bring you Star Fox 64 3D, a remake of the critically acclaimed Star Fox 64 that debuted in 1997 on the N64.

Star Fox is an arcade-style shooter, and this iteration is every bit as good, if not better, than the original. Fox and his team first appeared on the Super Nintendo in 1993, renowned for its Mode 7 technology that simulated 3D effects. Subsequently, the team faced Andross in Lylat Wars in 1997, followed by Star Fox Adventures and Assault against Andross’s remnants. The final title, Command Mission, was a major flop, nearly causing the Star Fox team to disappear. Fortunately, Nintendo salvaged everything and brought back the series with the superb Star Fox 64 3D on the Nintendo 3DS.

Graphics and Gameplay Upgrades

The most significant change is Nintendo’s powerful graphical upgrade, employing modern visual techniques while retaining the nostalgic feel and art style of the original. The result is spectacular, even if it’s not the Star Fox of the previous generation.

The game features three play modes: the main campaign, multiplayer, and challenge mode. The single-player campaign is very similar to the original, with a few minor adjustments. Instead of displaying everything on one screen like on the N64, Nintendo uses the top screen for the action and health bar, while the bottom screen shows pilot conversations and touch functions. The bottom screen also displays the menu and destination selection map. The multiplayer mode includes three battle types: survival, score, and time. Star Fox now allows the use of items to enhance the excitement of the battles.

You can play multiplayer with up to three friends via DS Download Play, but unfortunately, there is no online play, although you can see your opponents’ faces. Challenge mode allows you to replay unlocked stages to earn medals. The gameplay is very similar to the original, but without the Rumble Pack. Players use the Circle Pad for control, and while there’s an option to use the 3DS gyro sensor, I advise against it as it’s terrible and ruins the experience. In the game, you can choose different paths by completing certain objectives, increasing replay value.

Points of Dissatisfaction

So, what didn’t I like about this game? I’ll be a bit nitpicky, but first, as a music lover, I was disappointed with the music quality. Instead of the epic tracks in the trailer, Nintendo used MIDI. I love Nintendo, but MIDI is no longer suitable for showcasing the capabilities of this system. My garage band can produce better music, and Nintendo has far more money and resources than we do.

I also didn’t like the button layout for Boost and bombs, and the game only offers two fixed button configurations, lacking customization. Some other complaints relate to Andross’s final form, but I’ll avoid spoilers to not ruin the experience. The game is still as challenging as it was in 1997, which is good, but sometimes it’s very difficult, making you want to cry. Actually, I didn’t find many bad points, just minor nitpicks.

After all, the Nintendo 3DS has been discontinued and its eShop has also closed, so this might be the only way for you to enjoy this classic game once again.
