[3DS] Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers ROM
Game Files Information
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers Description
Demonic children or sweet pure souls, let’s delve into Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers. This is a spin-off of the main series remade for the Nintendo 3DS from the 1997 Sega Saturn original and released outside of Japan for the first time.
The story begins with you, a resident of Amami City and a hacker from the Spooky’s group, who, simply put, hacked into a beta called Paradigm X. There, the demon spirit Coyote Inunaki foresees a future catastrophe and sends you on a Vision Quest to live through another person’s life before they die. This person fights a secret organization called the Phantom Society by summoning demons from a gun-shaped computer called GUMPY and attempts to download a program that also contains a demon. From there, you uncover a conspiracy involving the use of a special computer chip and a solar plague in a city that attacks those connected to the Paradigm X beta, while your friend Yuichi is possessed by a white-haired demon named Amon. There’s a lot going on in the plot, but somehow, Soul Hackers strings it all together into a coherent story for 1997.
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers includes first-person dungeon crawling, demon negotiation, fusion, magnetite, and basic RPG combat, meaning no Press Turn system. Instead, you have a fairly basic JRPG elemental weakness system. However, demons work a bit differently. When a demon is recruited or fused, they have a gauge next to their name, ranging from one to five, representing their loyalty to the player. The higher the loyalty value, the more responsive the demon is to commands in battle.
Party formation has also changed. Instead of just throwing together a party of demons from any alignment, players will actually have to pay attention to it when building a team. There are the basic alignments of Law, Chaos, and Neutral. However, Soul Hackers adds two more alignments: Extreme Law and Extreme Chaos. The first three alignments will get along with each other in a working party. However, the two extreme alignments will not get along with anything opposite to their alignment. So, if a player has an Extreme Law demon in their party, they won’t be able to have any Chaos demons at all. Thankfully, this only affects the active party and not the player’s stock of reserve demons. Demon negotiation is also affected by what’s currently active in the party in a similar way. This approach to handling alignments and demons is far superior to previous Megami Tensei games, making party management a more thoughtful endeavor than the rest of the classic SMT series.
Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers may not be the prettiest or the best, but like the rest of the package, Soul Hackers has a certain charm to it, with one part really shining through. The game retains the classic SMT gameplay and feel while modernizing every aspect, with an extremely interesting and fun story and world to explore, adorned with excellent sprite work and dialogue that gives Soul Hackers its own unique personality, making it a great game for modern fans looking to try out older SMT titles.
