Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask Description

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask was released in 2012 for the Nintendo 3DS, marking the fifth Professor Layton game released in America. The four other games were all released for the original Nintendo DS, so symbolically, this felt like the dawn of a new era for Professor Layton.

Story and Characters

You play as the Professor—a puzzle master—along with his small group, consisting of young apprentice Luke and assistant Emmy. They have arrived in the bustling town of Monte d’Or, which is a good thing. A masked madman is turning townspeople into stone and doing all sorts of terrible things. He even calls himself the Masked Gentleman. The worst villain name ever, and he deserves to be caught. And of course, with Professor Layton there, the catching is sure to begin. You explore the town, meet some people… basically get your bearings until you find clues, solve puzzles, and all the familiar puzzle-solving antics of Professor Layton.

Gameplay and Puzzles are the Best in the Series

Like any other Professor Layton game, the puzzles have to be what makes the world move. In Miracle Mask, almost every conversation or situation leads to a puzzle, whether easy or hard. You’ll encounter puzzles that demand both your mathematical and logical skills. This game features a well-balanced assortment of puzzles, ranging from fairly easy ones to those that pose significant challenges. In other words, you’ll encounter puzzles that you can solve in a few minutes to ones that might take hours or even days to solve. The latter obviously requires you to really sit down and think thoroughly about what the solution could be.

Whenever permitted, you can use collected hint coins to receive hints on how to solve a puzzle. While a few hundred coins can be found throughout the story, it’s best to use them when you’re completely clueless about how to approach a puzzle. After all, these are some of the cleverest puzzles I’ve ever seen. However, if you truly think about these puzzles, you’ll realize that even the hardest ones are just common sense, and sometimes humor will shine through.

The game has a lot of replayability value, whether or not you complete the story mode, but again, the story mode is a lot of fun, so there’s no reason not to complete it. There are tons of collectible artifacts scattered throughout the game, as well as 135 hidden puzzles that are acquired in the same way, and it’s up to you to find them all. Each puzzle and story has a certain number of “Picarats” that you can earn. You win Picarats depending on how easily you figure out the solution to a puzzle. The more Picarats you get, the more top-secret bonus features you unlock, and if that’s still not enough for you, you can download a new puzzle every single day for a whole year from the Nintendo Network. That’s another 365 puzzles for you to enjoy anytime you want.

There are also a number of unlockable mini-games to try. In these mini-games, you can do things like train and play with a pet rabbit, help Madame Lapushka sell out her wares by strategically arranging them on a display, and collect flags on horseback.

Graphics and Gameplay

Again, the difference comes from Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask being the first game in the series to feature 3D graphics, and that really makes the characters come to life. In previous games, everything was flat and 2D. The team at Level-5 deserves a lot of credit because they did a great job of transitioning Layton’s art style into 3D, and it works really well. It also provides a nice change of pace, however slight, and that helps to refresh things a lot.

Conclusion

Among puzzle games, Layton remains king. Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask is a puzzle game that is perhaps a little familiar, but still one of the best in the series. Miracle Mask is a special adventure and one of the best 3DS games to date that we believe you cannot miss.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask has always been on the list of must-have Nintendo 3DS games. Now, you can enjoy this game on other platforms like mobile and PC thanks to Nintendo 3DS emulators.
