Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth Description

If you are a fan of Persona 3 or Persona 4, or just like games that are fighting, solving puzzles, and also “messy”, no less touching, then Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth on Nintendo 3DS will surely make your heart beat wildly. This is the first time characters from these two popular games “landed” together on the 3DS screen, and of course, they didn’t just come to… make small talk!

Story: One Day… The Whole World Got Stuck in a Labyrinth!

What seemed like a fun cultural festival at Yasogami High School suddenly turned into… a horrifying party when all the students realized they were trapped inside a mysterious labyrinth. And then, friends from Persona 3 unexpectedly appeared, along with two completely new characters – Zen and Rei – making things even more confusing. You will choose to start with either the Persona 3 group or Persona 4 group, and together find a way out of the labyrinth by exploring dark basements, fighting Shadows, and deciphering the secret behind this strange place.

Gameplay: Both Fighting, Also… Drawing Maps!

Unlike the main Persona series, Persona Q takes inspiration from the dungeon crawler style of Etrian Odyssey. This means you will have to manually… draw a map of each corridor, each corner of the labyrinth on the 3DS touch screen. This might sound like hard work, but it’s extremely fun, helping you feel like you are truly a “real explorer.” The feeling of making your map, slowly filling it in, is very rewarding and it makes you pay attention to your surroundings, which is quite different from other RPGs.

Combat: Dream Team, Explosive Skills

You can form a team with familiar faces like Yu, Yosuke, Chie, Akihiko, Mitsuru… and also the two new characters. Then you can customize their Personas, skills, and tactics to “handle” every challenge. The turn-based combat system with its feature of exploiting enemy weaknesses (Critical and Boost) makes every battle intense and extremely satisfying to watch. It’s a system that makes you think about who to put in your party and what Personas to bring. It’s not just hitting hard, it’s hitting smart.

Graphics & Music: Cute But Still “Cool”

The characters are “chibi-fied” (big head, small body) and incredibly cute, but they still keep their original personalities and “sharp” dialogues. The labyrinth is designed colorfully, gloomy but full of creativity, and the background music is both mysterious and lively — true Persona style! The blend of cute visuals with the serious Persona themes is really a unique charm. It makes the scary parts a little less scary, but the overall atmosphere is still very Persona-like, which fans will appreciate.

Humorous, Touching, and… Messing Up the Labyrinth

Besides the tense moments, the game is also full of humor with a series of “over-the-top” dialogues between characters. From nonsensical rivalries between the two groups, to moments where everyone panics in front of a… wooden chest, all create a story that is both funny and full of emotions. The interactions between the Persona 3 and Persona 4 casts are a big highlight, making you laugh out loud sometimes. It is a very good mix of funny and serious parts in the story.
